TRADITIONS
Ragtime Cowboy Joe
“He always sings
raggy music to the cattle
as he swings
back and forward in the saddle,
on a horse - a pretty good horse!
He's got a syncopated gaiter,
and you ought to hear the meter
to the roar of his repeater;
how they run - yes run! –
when they hear him 'a-comin',
cause the western folks all know,
he's a high-falootin', rootin, tootin',
son of a gun from ol' Wyoming,
Ragtime Cowboy
Talk about your Cowboy,
Ragtime Cowboy Joe.”

All Sports
Arriving Early
The Stampede is known for their dedication to the Cowboys and Cowgirls. Before each game, many students wait hours, sometimes even camping out the night before, to watch their beloved teams play.
The Beer Song
The Beer Song is played often multiple times during a game to the cheers of the students. However, students must "call" for the beer song in order for it to be played.
“In heaven there is no beer, NO BEER!
That’s why we drink it here, RIGHT HERE!
And when we’re gone from here,
Our friends will be drinking all the beer!”
Football
Boom Boom - Western Thunder Marching Band, plays the song "Boom Boom," and as they play members of the band begin a back and forth motion that is opposite from one another (So as one person dips forward the person next to them goes back, and so on). The idea behind Boom Boom is to get the WHOLE student section involved!
The Bronze Boot - The annual Wyoming-Colorado State football game has evolved into one of the most bitterly contested rivalries in college football. This is one of the oldest rivalries west of the Mississippi River. Each year leading up to the game, the game ball is carried on foot by both UW and CSU’s ROTC detachments to the hosting stadium. The Bronze Boot has become one of the most famous traveling trophies in college football.
NEW! Cowboy Walk
NEW! Cowboy Walk - With Head Football Coach Dave Christensen the Cowboys will start a new tradition this year. Two hours prior to kickoff the Wyoming Football team will be joined by the Western Thunder Marching Band, Pistol Pete and the UW Spirit Squad as they walk from the Hilton Garden Inn to the Rochelle Athletics Center. The Stampede and Wyoming Fans are encouraged participate in the walk by lining the route and cheering on the team.
Basketball
NEW! Roll Call
This year The Stampede will start a new tradition at men’s basketball games as the team is welcomed to the Dome of Doom with a roll call. As the team warms up The Stampede will chant each players name followed by claps until the player acknowledges The Stampede and student section. One member of The Stampede will lead the group by distinguishing which player to chant next. After one player has acknowledged the section The Stampede will move on to another player warming up until all Cowboy Basketball players have been accounted for.
You! You! You!- After a visiting team player commits a foul The Stampede Chants You! You! You! As they point at the player who committed the foul.
Whoosh!- The "Whoosh" cheer consists of raising both hands in the air prior to a Cowboy or Cowgirl free throw and bringing them down while saying "Whoosh!" if the shot is made.
Fouling Out - As opposing players foul out a variety of “goodbye” songs are played in the Arena Auditorium as The Stampede sends them off by waving goodbye.
Right/Left - As visiting teams shoot free throws in the Dome of Doom The Stampede chants “Right, Right, Right” or “Left, Left, Left” to try to misguide the free throw.
Newspapers- The Stampede will be provided with newspapers to hold up and rattle as the visiting team is introduced.
Air-Ball- Once an opposing player shoots an air ball, The Stampede chants “air ball” and that player is targeted for the rest of the game.
- The Back Turn- The Wyoming fans turn their backs to the basketball court as the opposing team is introduced to the crowd.
Volleyball
W-Y-O- With each hit from a Cowgirl Volleyball player The Stampede responds with a letter from W-Y-O first
W, then Y following the second hit and O with the last hit.
The Back Turn – The Stampede turn their backs to the court as the opposing team is introduced to the crowd.
Point, Wyoming! - After each cowgirl point the PA Announcer prompts the crowd by saying “point” The Stampede responds with “Wyoming!”
Soccer
The Back Turn – The Stampede turns their backs to the field as the opposing team is introduced to the crowd.
Ole Ole Ole Ole- Prior to the opening kickoff of Cowgirl Soccer games The Stampede sings “Ole Ole Ole Ole” to get the game started off right.
